This feature initially started as a custom development request from two clients who shared a similar need: sending individualized promotional codes. When this request surfaced, I recognized it as a recurring problem based on a similar conversation I had with another client a few months earlier. Rather than treating it as a one-off solution, I proposed turning it into a native feature available to all clients.
The main challenge was that we had already committed to delivering a solution to these clients within a tight timeline. To meet that commitment, I worked closely with engineering to design an approach that maximized reuse of existing platform capabilities. This included leveraging existing data import mechanisms, automated relational data removal, and native integration of personal data within emails. As a result, development focused on the crux of the problem: reliable code attribution.
Given the constraints, we made conscious tradeoffs. For example, we deprioritized ease of testing and advanced configuration in the initial release in order to deliver a functional solution in under two months. This allowed the original clients to start using the feature as promised while minimizing delivery risk.
After release, we gathered early feedback from these clients and iterated on the experience to improve usability through easier import, integration and testing. What started as a client-specific request ultimately became a scalable product capability, validated by real usage and customer input.
Through this project, I learned how to work within the constraints of an established product to deliver meaningful value while minimizing engineering effort. By prioritizing reuse over rewriting, we were able to ship faster and ensure that future improvements benefited not only this use case, but also addressed limitations in other parts of the system that had previously gone unprioritized.
